Disk Defrag cannot open a file(system32\dfrg.msc) to run
When I click to open the defrag program this message pops up:MMC cannot open the file c:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc.This file either does not exist, is not a MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC.So what do i do? I have looked around and I still have the file on the computer but I can't open it at all. My computer needs to defrag very badly. This there a way to get a new file or program? Or can I override this issue?help1 person got this answerI do too

Hi Highhopespf, Thanks for using Microsoft Answers! I've seen that installing Service Pack 3 can sometimes resolve this. The following link should help you get that installed: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389 Let me know if that helps! Hi Highhopespf, This is caused when the actual Snap-In file becomes corrupt. You need to delete/rename the snap-in file and then t will get recreated when you attempt to launch it again. See step by step instructions here if requried: http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/mmc-open-file/ Hope this helps. R.

I get the same problem, there are actually two, this "cannot open file" and mine "Access is denied" for dfrg.msc.There is another thread in the forum with the same problem without an answer.I tried the solution at http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/mmc-open-file/. It didn't resolve the problem for me.Interestingly, dfrg was the only file in the .../Application Data/Microsoft/MMC folder. There is a free "Smart Defragger" available for download from IOBit's website.
